Los Angeles is the perfect destination city for anyone and everyone with a crazy notion, dream or aspiration. It is, after all, the entertainment capital of the known Universe so shouldn’t our hometown Auto Show play host to some of the wildest concept cars any respectable automaker can possibly dream up? Absolutely.
Los Angeles is very well known as the land where dreams come true but it is also the city where being ugly is a mortal sin. So if you want to make here just make sure you are pretty where it counts. Unless, of course, you want to be a writer or journalist and then you can be as ugly as all get out. I only speak from the prison of my own average appearance. Perhaps that explains why I am so cruel to ugly cars? Moving right along…
The 2010 LA Auto Show played host to a number of concept cars from a number of different automakers but much like you see in a cut-throat auditioning process, there were only 3 vehicles that passed mustard as truly exceptional.
The rest of the concepts were quite possibly designed by one-eyed pirates or were just so bland that they blended in with the rest of the production vehicles. That’s bad when you are parked by an Aveo. Or even worse—a much better looking production car!
I may or may not be pointing to a particular GM concept but this article is all about praising the brilliant concept cars and not tearing down those made by an automaker in bankruptcy. That’s like punching Lindsey Lohan in the gut, stealing her Betty Ford money and then running away.
The most visually arresting concept was without question the Infiniti Essence which may or may not point the way to the future design language for the brand. Let’s just hope it does because it was also the sexiest new design on display. It also redefined the term “fitted luggage” in my mind but if you want to know what that means you have to check the picture slideshow!
Given the rather staid concept sedan over at Subaru it was nice to see that Mazda added some “Va-Va-Va Voom” to its usual “Zoom-Zoom” design repertoire with the Shinari sedan. If the next generation 3 or 6 sedans look even remotely like this concept then they are sure to be big sellers.
With most concept cars you never know if the vehicle even has an engine under the hood as they are very often just “design studies.” Not so at the Jaguar with its supremely sexy C-X75 concept coupe which boasted the title of world’s first gas turbine electric powered sports coupe. What does that mean?
Apparently Jaguar and engineers at Bladen Jets discovered special turbines could be used to recharge an electric vehicle’s batteries on the move affording this pretty silver feline a projected range of 560 miles. Now that doesn’t change how slowly batteries recharge by conventional means but it sounds like the start of an intelligent answer. And boy is that Jaguar C-X75 sexy!
Oddly enough, it is rather more difficult to find any humans in LA with this Jaguar’s tremendously elevated split level of brains and beauty. It just goes to show that being pretty shouldn’t give you an excuse to not work as hard for respect. And this Jag deserves both our desire and respect.
