I’m new in town, and don’t have any family in the area. I’m going to really miss them this year. Do you have any advice to chase away the blues?
Missing Them in Dayton, OH
Dear Missing Them,
It’s hard to be away from your loved ones over the holidays, but with a little work, I’m sure you will be just fine. First off, call your family on the holiday. They are assuredly missing you as much as you are missing them. Try to time your call outside of the time when they will be doing gift exchange, eating meals and other group activities. As for the rest of the day, the trick is to make sure you have something to do that will keep your mind off missing your family on that day.
I know it can be hard to ask others for something, especially around the holidays. If you have made any friends in town, now is the time to get to know them better. You may not be comfortable barging in on someone else’s family gathering, but you aren’t likely to be the only one spending the holidays solo. Ask around about other’s plans. Maybe you can find someone else, or even a small group to get together on Christmas and/or Christmas Eve. You can either hold festivities at the home of one person, with everyone contributing to the work and cost, or you can all go out for a meal and activities.
If you are so new that you have not yet made any friends, as unlikely as that sounds, then you still have options. Dayton has several options for those who are flying solo, and in need of things to do on Christmas. I have listed several below. More information on these activities can be found at Activedayton.com
