Football fans in Miami got an early Christmas present as it was announced that European giants Barcelona and AC Milan will be stopping in South Florida next August as part of both teams’ respective North American tours.
The Barcelona website published this information on Thursday. They plan on doing a three-match tour that would be played on the eastern side of the US as compared to their 2009 edition where they played in Los Angeles and Seattle. Their stop in Miami
AC Milan have not published any information regarding their plans in the United States. So if this is confirmed, it South Florida after a 16-year absence.
The last time they played there was back on May 29, 1994 when Milan played the Colombian national team. To this day it is still the match with the highest attendance in the Magic City with over 57,724 spectators. The milanistas lost the match 2-1. Both teams were stacked just starting with Colombia. Current Philadelphia Union goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon started that match for match. AC Milan were still stocked even though they were missing legendary players like Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Marcel Desailly, Daniele Masaro, Roberto Donadoni, and Demetrio Albertini. The nucleus of this team was preparing for Italy’s World Cup run so then-coach Fabio Capello had to use players like Gianluigi Lentini, Christian Panucci, as well Zvinomar Boban.
Meanwhile the Blaugrana will be making their debut in Miami. Lionel Messi would most likely be limited as he will most likely be called up for Argentina for the Copa
If there is one snag to this match is the fact that it will most likely be held at Sun Life Stadium, so there is a chance that they will be playing with the red clay in one corner of the pitch. There will also be some scheduling crunches as the Florida Marlins are scheduled to play the St. Louis Cardinals the following day. This should be one of the last football friendlies that will be compromised as the Marlins will be moving in 2012 to their new stadium where the legendary Orange Bowl was located.
