BC HERITAGE PARTY ANNOUNCES PLAN TO GIVE CONTROL OF GOVERNMNET TO CITIZENS OF B.C.
ABBOTSFORD, BC: The BC Heritage Party today unveiled the most important plank in its platform for the 2013 General election, This will be the first item on the order paper and is the measure that will make all subsequent measures possible and affordable.
Party Leader Wilf Hanni says that his Party believes that the issue of who controls the government is the most important issue to face the citizens of British Columbia and all the citizens of North America today. He say that Americans are waking up to the fact that they have a huge government that is trying to control them and are refusing to stand for it. He believes all Canadians, including the citizens of British Columbia, are beginning to face the same reality here.
The first measure on the agenda of a new BC Heritage Party Government will be to take control of the Government of British Columbia out of the hands of the large foreign controlled corporations, unions and other special interest groups and put it where it belongs; in the hands of the citizens of British Columbia.
This will include legislation forbidding provincial political parties from accepting donations from those organizations and imposing heavy penalties on any party that does. This will take away the incentive for political parties to sell the services of the governments that they form to the highest bidder.
Then the new BC Heritage Party Government will implement its 6 point plan for Representative Democracy in order to put control of the Government in the hands of the citizens who vote. This will include the following:
Preferential balloting for the election of MLA’s, which will ensure that no MLA candidate can be elected without receiving the support of the majority of the constituents who vote, by splitting the opposing vote between two or more similar candidates.
Free votes in the Legislature, which will allow the MLA to vote for the wishes of his or her constituents ahead of the demands of his or her Party. Under this system, the MLA need not fear that, by voting against a government bill, they will bring down the government and force an early election. Because the votes will all be considered free, no defeat of a government bill will result in the defeat of the government.
Effective Recall Legislation: This will allow the voters in a constituency to trigger a referendum on whether or not to fire their MLA if he or she fails to represent their interests, if they can gather the signatures of 15% of the voters on a petition calling for the referendum. An MLA will be dismissed from office and a by-election will be held to replace that MLA if a simple majority of those who vote in the referendum vote to have that MLA fired.
Referenda Legislation, which will allow the government to take moral issues and other major issues to the voters in a referendum and let the voters decide. This can be done very cost effectively with modern technology like the internet or by combining referenda with civic elections or provincial elections.
Citizens’ Initiative Legislation which will revise the current law to make it easier for the citizens to initiate a referendum and make the results of the referendum binding on the government.
Fixed Election Dates will be continued and the legislation will be strengthened to actually prevent the government from calling an earlier election simply because the governing party determines that it would be in their own selfish interest to do so. Early elections will not be used in the event that a government sponsored bill fails to receive the approval of the legislature. In such cases, the Government will simply move onto the next item on their agenda.
All of these measures, along with other measures recommended by the citizens of British Columbia in province wide consultations will be included in a new British Columbia Constitution which will be presented to the voters for ratification in a province wide referendum during the first term in office of the BC Heritage Party.
Party Leader Wilf Hanni invites all of the other political parties in British Columbia to adopt similar policies and to copy any policies they want from our website. “The important thing is not who the next Premier of British Columbia will be” said Hanni, “the important thing is whether that Premier and his or her government will take control of the government away from the special interest groups and give control to the citizens of British Columbia. This province belongs to them and they have a right to control how it is run.”
