What happens when Hanukkah and Repeal Day (the end of Prohibition) fall in the same week? You guessed it, Holiday Beer Madness! There’s so much madness that hundreds of people are going to dress up like Santa for a bar crawl around the city. Santacon 2010 is here as well!
Hanukkah started Wednesday, December 1st and ends Thursday December 9th. During that entire stretch of 8 crazy nights, Schmaltz Brewing Company, the makers of He’brew “The Chosen Beer” has you covered. They created a list of 88 chosen bars across the country where the bartenders will tap a different Jewbelation keg each night of Hanukkah. In San Francisco, head to Church Key and Tornado and for the rest of the country, find your nearest bar here.
Not to be outdone, Christmas fanatics can celebrate with Santacon. If you haven’t seen it, get ready to be amazed by hundreds of Santas swarming around the city Saturday afternoon. Everyone gets organized at 12:30pm at the Civic Center and then descends on different neighborhoods and bars. To join in the fun, here’s all you need to know. There are similar events across the country, so don’t despair, get info here.
For the history buffs: Prohibition began on January 16, 1920 and ended on December 5, 1933 with the ratification of the 21st Amendment. To celebrate Repeal Day, there are a bunch of beer festivities this weekend.
Get things started on Saturday, December 4th by drinking some Batch 19 with Brewmaster Keith Villa. Batch 19 is a pre-prohibition style lager from MillerCoors that’s brewed from a recipe they found in an old logbook dating back nearly 100 years. According to the brewers, it delivers a bold, hoppy flavor that’s surprisingly well-balanced. Find out more from their website, Facebook page, and Twitter feed. Mr. Villa and Batch 19 will be making the rounds in San Francisco on Saturday night, so catch them at the following bars:
- 8:15 – 9:30 pm McTeague’s Saloon
- 9:45 – 10:45 pm Tee Off Bar and Grill
- 11:00 – 12:00 am Hotel Utah Saloon
Naturally, the great brew-pub 21st Amendment in SOMA is having a Repeal Day party. Starting Sunday, Dec. 5th at 4pm, they’re pulling out all the stops with a 1930’s roll-back: 5 cent beers! But, check the fine print: there’s only one keg at that price and you need a password from their Twitter feed.
