Reality TV star Bethenny Frankel, who lost a stunning 30 pounds just 3 weeks after giving birth, had some unhealthy eating habits when she was younger.
“I used to get drunk and binge on everything in the deli, and then do a juice fast or starve, then do it all over again,” Bethenny, 40, says in the January 2011 issue of RedBook.
‘PREGNANCY’S NOT AN EXCUSE TO OVEREAT’
Frankel, who wrote the best-selling diet book Naturally Thin and has her own exercise DVD, says she was careful to not emotionally overeat while pregnant last year with daughter Bryn (who was born in May 2010).
“Most people treat pregnancy like the big binge, and then they can’t take the excess weight off so they go on a crash diet,” says Bethenny.
“When people find out you’re pregnant, they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, you’re going to gain all this weight, and you’re going to get hemorrhoids, and you’re not going to be able to go to the bathroom.’ I didn’t listen to anyone; I knew I was going to do it my way.”
While fans were shocked at how quickly Bethenny lost the 35 pounds she gained while pregnant, Frankel credits doing yoga and portion control for regaining her size-4 bikini body in record time. She also walks a lot and uses the elliptical trainer in her apartment several times a week.
‘EXERCISE IS LIKE AN OLD FRIEND’
“I do [yoga] two to three times a week,” she says. “I do yoga at night with my husband [Jason Hoppy] after we put the baby down. I say, a family that namastes together, stays together.”
Bethenny, who struggled with eating disorders and exercise bulimia during her teens and twenties, says having a laid-back approach to dieting and fitness ultimately is the best approach.
“You shouldn’t dread working out,” she says.
“Exercise is like an old friend: You may not be able to see that friend all the time, but you’re not mad when you see them, you’re happy, and you get right back into it.”
