Finding gifts for children that are fun, educational, and teach values can be a bit of a challenge. As you review your Christmas list and ponder over whether to wrestle with the last minute crowd, consider the following for the little ones on your list:
- Basic Christian Virtues – “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.” [Galatians 5:22-23a] Virtue Toys publishes the VIRTUEGAME that is for ages 5 and up. This game engages players in fun tasks that are related to one of the following virtues: compassion, respect, enthusiasm, trust, friendliness, determination, responsibility, integrity, cooperation, and thankfulness. If purchased through Amazon.com today, it should actually make it by Christmas with one-day shipping. The price is $25, but with one-day shipping the cost may end up being substantially higher. Unfortunately, there are no local stores that carry the game.
- Money Management – “The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.” [Proverbs 22:7] Given the state of the economy, more people are becoming aware of the need for solid money management skills. Financial Peace Jr., for children ages 3-12, is a biblically-based tool developed by Dave Ramsey that teaches children about money. The cost is $10 if purchased from the developer’s website, but is a bit higher at $17.95 through Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble. You may be able to order through a local Barnes & Noble to pick it up from the same location by Christmas.
- Social Skills – “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law of the Prophets.” [Matthew 7:12] Children with good social skills are more likely to handle peer issues appropriately. There has been a lot of attention on bullying lately. Schools are adopting anti-bullying programs to combat the problem, but parents also can help children develop skills to handle negative social situations. A card game developed by Dr. Allan L. Beane, Bully Free Card Game, which costs $11.01 through Amazon.com is one of several tools a parent can use. It is for children ages 9 to 12, and should be delivered by Christmas with one-day shipping. A great sleepover activity and a fun way to see how your children and their friends may react in bullying situations.
