It was supposed to be a close game. Covington was athletic and had beaten Massac County badly in the first round of the Heritage Bank Hardwood Classic. But after a close first quarter the Lady Lakers turned it into a rout as they rolled to 54-31 victory in a second round game on Tuesday evening.
Calloway’s defense was suffocating. They held Covington to 29.5 percent shooting from the field and 10 percent from three-point range. They also forced 20 turnovers while committing just 11 themselves.
“Covington is a very good team,” Lady Lakers’ head coach Scott Sivills said. “But we kind of took them out of what they wanted to do in the second quarter with our defense.”
Calloway was led by Averee Fields’ 16 points, seven rebounds, five blocked shots, and three steals. Taylor Futrell also reached double figures with 11 points.
Iesha Carruthers led the way for Covington with 12 points.
