The War on Christmas needs simply a look at God’s Word to get a good plumb job, a thorough squaring up. A follower of Jesus Christ must understand the world society ruled by sinful men and deceived by the prince of this World, Satan, will always hate Christ. This should not be a shock in the least. Jesus said this: “You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” (Matthew 10:22 NIV)
Now, is this war a War on Christ or Christmas or a little of both? Alex Altman’s article A Brief History on the War on Christmas for Time Magazine located at http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1868542,00.html is a good read. He historically asserts that the Puritans who stood square on God’s Word actually made the celebration of Christmas illegal from 1659 to 1681 while controlling Parliament. O’Reilly of Fox as well as many others feels the riddance of Christmas is attune to our society’s stamped approval of legalized drugs, euthanasia acceptance, abortion, and gay rights.
Someone I know well, throughout the year uses in his farewells to others these simple two words, “Merry Christmas!” It is an act of humor as well as an attempt to get others to think about what we really should be celebrating daily: our salvation and sanctification in Jesus Christ and His imminent return.
Many Christians waste their time fighting for the cause to keep Christmas signs alive in retail stores. Maybe they should hear the words of Christ: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.” (Matthew 23:23 KJV) “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Matthew 9:13 NASB) “‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.’” (Matthew 15:8 HCSB) It is bothering that Christian organizations have a “who’s naughty and who’s nice list” of retailers during Christmas. Such tactics seem to be a un-conversion experience converting from bearers of God’s grace to bearers of the Law heralding this death magnet to a world of sinners. This gives yet another opportunity to misunderstand the grace and truth found in Jesus Christ. A simple prayer in Jesus name for those who are denouncing Christmas would suffice and do far more than lists. Does anyone know how much of a profit those selling items with Jesus: the reason for the season made and where the money went?
A change in the attitude toward Christmas for many believers is needed.
What cannot be changed is the attitude of nonbelievers. Only the Holy Spirit can do that. Manipulation is not God’s tool. Let our ears not be dull to the sounds from nonbelievers concerning Christmas. Remember King David’s experience in 2 Samuel 16? He is cursed but understands criticism may be coming from the Lord.
The angels, the shepherds, and the wise men are seen celebrating the birth of Jesus in God’s Word. A capitalistic venture Christmas such as it is in our age and day is not seen in God’s Word. What are believers to celebrate together as the Body of Christ? Followers are to celebrate the Lord’s Supper together until He returns. (See 1 Corinthians 11:23-26) Christians are to celebrate our Lord by loving Him; others as oneself. (See Matthew 22:37-40) His beloved are to be thankful and celebrate having their life hidden in Him.
