CD REVIEW: Last year, The Washington Chorus recorded it’s 2009 Christmas concert performed at the Music Center at Strathmore. Joined by The Whitman Choir and the National Capital Brass and Percussion, this recording presents a rich tapestry of music for the holiday season. I was fortunate to attend one of the other performances of the program at The Kennedy Center and was amazed that the same excitement and festivity that I experienced then was again realized as I sat in the comfort of my living room. Dorian Recordings, a division of Sono Luminus, LLC has done a remarkable job not only recording the live performance, but also in capturing the joyous spirit that embodied the singers and the audience. Among the carols arranged by Julian Wachner are Angels We Have Heard on High, Un Flambeau, The First Nowell, O Come, O Come Emmanuel and Joy to the World. As a singer, I was drawn to the overall beauty of the chorus, but as a lover of the organ and the importance of instruments in the context of a Christmas church service: I was more impressed that the organ and brass had equal opportunities to be showcased. This fine recording brings voices and instruments in full consort, lifting hearts towards the joyous season! This disc would make a wonderful stocking stuffer or early Christmas gift! **It is also wonderful to know when a recording is produced and engineered by professionals with true musical training and an ear for musical sound. The head engineer is an alum of Shenandoah University and teaches there part time. Special thanks to Mrs. Jessica Shores for providing me with the review copy of this project.
