Do you recall the poetess who opened, at the Soul Box Café, for the international songstress Lisa McClendon? Well, her name is Christina Williamson and she is on her way to receive more success through her ‘spoken word’ talent. Christina auditioned for Amateur Night at The Ritz Theater here in Jacksonville, Florida and she will be participating in the show on January 7th. 2011. When she wins the first round, she’ll have two more opportunities to go for the GOLD.
What is Amateur Night at the Ritz Theater?
Amateur Night at the Ritz – First Friday of Every Month promptly @ 7:00pm (no amateur night shows held during July and August). It was modeled after ‘Amateur Night at the famed Apollo Theatre in Harlem’. Contestants compete for cash prizes (third place is award $25, second place is award $50 and first place is awarded $100). Thus they have 10 Amateur Nights a year. The audience will be given the task to select who they think should win by cheering for that particular contestant.
The top three contestants then go on to the semi-finals, which are held at the end of each quarter. The three winners from that Amateur Night will go on to compete in the ‘finals’ to be held in December of 2011. The cash prizes increase each event, but the amount has not been released to the contestants. Come out and cheer for Christina to win a spot on Amateur Night at The Ritz.
McDonald’s is the sole sponsor for this event.
Ritz Theatre and Museum
The Ritz Theatre and Museum was constructed in 1999 on the site of the 1929 Ritz Theater movie house in Jacksonville’s historic African American community of La Villa. During La Villa’s height of activity in the 1920s-1960s, it was known as the “Harlem of the South.”
The mission of the Ritz Theatre and Museum is to “research, record, and preserve the material and artistic culture of African American life in Northeast Florida and the African Diaspora, and present in an educational or entertaining format, the many facets that make up the historical and cultural legacy of this community.”
Building on the community’s proud heritage, the Ritz is truly a Special Place, where history’s missing chapters are being restored, where talent is nurtured and creativity is celebrated. It is a community gathering place where ideas are exchanged, information is disseminated and a roadmap for the future is developed.
Whether visiting the museum, attending a concert, viewing a film or listening to a lecture, the Ritz has a special energy that leaves you with a special feeling. There is always an exhibition, music, dance or the dramatic arts inside the Ritz that will enthrall, educate and entertain.
