The colder temperatures have arrived — as advertised!
We saw temperatures around 50 degrees on Sunday. We probably will not see that number again until Thursday. Cold high pressure is in control over a good part of the eastern U.S. and will provide a cold airmass over the forecast area. High temperatures will stay in the 40s with overnight lows down into the teens through Thursday.
Milder air returns into the area on Friday. An area of low pressure in the Plains will dive into the Tennessee River Valley into the weekend. Ahead of the low, temperatures will rise well into the 50s on Saturday.
The “problem’ arrives on Sunday. Models are not consistent and showing several solutions. One model shows a new low forming off the North Carolina/Virginia coast and lifting Northeastward. Another model shows the low remaining inland and moving into New England. Another blast of arctic air will plummet behind this system. The track and timing will be very important. It’s possible we may start as rain but change to frozen precipitation.
Also, one particular long range model has been trying to push temperatures into the 60s on Sunday. However, I do not see that happening at this time. A strong low pressure system over Eastern New England, with a high pressure system over the Mid Atlantic, could keep a cool wedge of air in place. Also, as mentioned, another piece of colder air from Canada will dominate the east coast, once again next week. This needs to be monitored
