Despite Massey Energy’s claims that its safety record is the best in the industry no U.S. coal company had a worse fatality record than Massey and this was true long before the Upper Big Branch Mine explosion.
54 workers have been killed at Massey Energy owned mines since 2000, dozens more than any other coal company. 23 were killed prior to the UBB explosion, 29 from the explosion and two more since.
Massey was responsible for more miner deaths from 2000 to 2009 than any other U.S. company. Both Massey Energy and CONSOL Energy Inc. had 23 fatalities during those 10 years. But CONSOL produced more coal, giving Massey a much poorer ratio of deaths-to-production.
Massey amassed thousands of more safety violations than any other coal company between 2000 and 2009.
