Elegant, luxurious makeup is always a welcome gift for a fashionista, but the Dior Holiday Makeup collection is, I think, the one thing you might want to splurge on for yourself. Sure, give these to deserving people on your gift list, but make sure that you select at least some of the makeup items for yourself–even one will make your day, and your evening.
“Dior women are not shy,” designer John Galliano has been quoted as saying. But the Dior Holiday collection focuses on deep, smoky and mauve/purple tones, with soft pink hues for the lips, and endless lashes on the eyes that really work for those with classic tastes, as well as those who embrace the latest trends. Here are my picks of just some of the amazing makeup Dior is offering for Holiday 2010:
Among other delights, Dior offers four, red-quilted, “cannage patterned”, patent-leather holiday compacts with large, silver “D” dangles, that are bound to delight everyone on your list. There is always that “wow!” factor when you take these out of their black, velvet pouches. The Holiday 2010 offerings include a complete face palette ($75.00), and a brush set ($60.00) and two even more affordable palettes, one for lips, one for eyes. I tried the Holiday Small Eye Palette, ($44.00), containing a quartet of shimmery, mauve-ish and silver tones that can be worn sheer and blended down during the day, and with the same colors, amped up and made more intense for evening. They are so beautifully coordinated, you can’t make a mistake! A dual-tipped sponge applicator completes the set.
If four gorgeous, shimmery shades of shadow are gorgeous, five are even better! The Dior 5 Color Eyeshadow Gold Collection Limited Edition ($58.00) arrives in a blue box, and a black velvet pouch, holding a classic, deep blue Dior compact with silver accents. This palette has nearly as much glamorous glow as a Christmas tree! The center diamond holds a glittery, metallic silver. But there is also a sparkling gold and black, and two shimmery shades of copper and bronze. It’s the perfect, versatile palette for party eye looks. Two mini-sized, dual-tipped, sponge applicators make it easy to apply and touch up anywhere, thanks to a large, interior mirror.
If there’s one little splurge that I consider a Holiday “Must-Have,” it’s Dior’s Serum de Rouge Luminous Lip Color Treatments ($32.00). There are plenty of colors to choose from, including five pink-centric, holiday offerings of these fantastically sexy lip colors. You aren’t going to want to be without at least one of these. This is more than a lipstick or a gloss, although it has both those properties, but it’s also a lip treatment that brings moisture and pampering to even the driest lips, all in a slim-line compact dispensing a soft, creamy, easy-glide formula full of rich, gorgeous, luminous color. The product is touted as having 10 times more active skincare ingredients than other lipsticks, and it is eEnriched with mango butter and other natural emollients so even if your lips look and feel terrible, this lipstick will smooth those issues overt. And, this nourishing treatment boosts micro circulation and collagen levels, helps to plump up lips, and protects with SPF20. If that’s not enough for your money, the lip colors stay put and resist bleeding into those little lines that can form above your lip line. The holiday colors are: “Ruby Serum #870,” a deep berried rose, “Pearly Pink Serum #470”, (a soft, clear, shiny, light, but visible, pink; “Radiant Pink Serum #560” (a clear, bright, medium pink); “Pink Ruby Serum #670” a deep, blue-pink, and “Plum Serum #880” a deep, clear plum. No matter which ones you choose, they will make a sexy, beautiful, glamorous statement. *there are also hydrating and smoothing Rouge Dior Lipsticks ($30.00) but I didn’t get samples for this review.
You want your eyes to glow, and your lips to shine, but today’s trend is for matte skin. One easy way to get the look is with Diorskin Crystal Nude ($40.00) , a solid primer and skin perfecter that mattifies your complexion with or without makeup. It works with all skin types, acting like an optical filter that erases shine and diminishes flaws, thanks to totally transparent silicone microspheres. They act as a soft focus to reduce imperfections and even out and smooth the surface of the skin, and they do it by “melting” into the skin in a ultra-thin cover, making the product appear invisible to the eye and the touch. If I didn’t apply the product myself, I might not have even believed I had anything on –it’s that imperceptible! Of course, they also mattify the skin and make it feel silky and smooth. The clear and silver-topped compact includes a sponge applicator with two different textures. On bare skin, the rougher, sponge-y side should be used for an even finish and ultra-translucent complexion with no shine. If you’re wearing foundation, use the smooth, velvety side over your makeup to set it, and create that coveted, matte finish. This is perfect for touch-ups, too.
During the holiday, and every day, your hands are a tool for expression. Paint them with one of Dior’s long wearing favorites: Dior Vernis Nail Enamel ($21.00) and feel elegant all season long. The tops are shiny silver, the brushes, wide enough to coat a nail in a single swipe. There are 11 collectible shades of which I tried three: “Graphic Berry # 671” is a bold, creamy, shiny color that looks a lot more like lipstick red to me, than berry but the bright, clear color looks movie-star perfect on fingers and toes. The most elegant holly berry red, ever! “Czarina Gold #916” is a surprising and lovely take on the blackened silvers and charcoals so trendy right now. This color is a blackened brown, with tons of gold shimmer and it looks modern, and more interesting than plain ole black or grey. “Psychedelic Orange #545” really isn’t neon, but it’s a rich, creamy tangerine perfect for your Winter beach resort vacation, or perhaps, to add allure to a Winter White outfit. Apart from the colors in the permanent collections, there are plenty of other holiday 2010 shades (*exclusive to Saks) including: Black Ink, City of Gold, Pink Icing, Ivory, Pink Kimono, Aztec Chocolate, Purple Revolution (*exclusive to Sephora.com). Smoking Plum and Red Royalty.
