In the past these articles have explained what alternative medicine is, in its numerous modalities. This time, the focus will be on what altmed is not, such as eugenics. This science, often referred to as “Frankenstein science” because of its methods, is an alternative to just about anything ethical for the most part. Whether you consider it playing God to tamper with what is natural, or merely don’t like the idea of all the so-called experiments that go wrong, the basic idea is that humans should not mess with what is not meant to be.
The idea many people have about eugenics is that its aim is based on humanitarian motives. When proponents of this science speak of improving the human race by means of genetic manipulation, though, their motives are far from compassionate. Eliminating hunger, poverty, and suffering by means of cooperation among people is the way to change society. What eugenics intends is to remove the problems facing the world by removing people they consider to blame for everything. Sound familiar? Like perhaps something endorsed by a guy named Adolf back in the mid-twentieth century?
Eugenics would prefer that certain groups of humans–namely minorities, those with what they consider undesirable characteristics (such as what? Curly hair, left-handedness, green eyes?) refrain from reproducing at all. Anyone who is not up to their standards, physically, should be eliminated to avoid being a drain on society. Stephen Hawking, therefore, would be toast; Helen Keller would have been euthanized; and a good deal of children who have learning disabilities, yet who have grown up to be productive citizens (for example, Bill Hewlett, of Hewlett-Packard, to name but one). Women expecting a child considered (or predicted to be) sub-standard would be pressured to abort. Since many who are involved in eugenics have notions that certain racial and ethnic groups are inferior (check out Margaret Sanger’s remarks about non-whites, “The Negro Project”, at http://www.citizenreviewonline.org/special_issues/population/the_negro_project.htm), the whole idea is fundamentally an Aryan supremacy tactic.
True alternative medicine seeks to improve the lives of all people regardless of their origin or that of their ancestors. Its many methods reflect the cultures of a cross-section of the entire human race, considering all of them to have valid input where the quest for wellness is concerned. Alternative medicine respects the experiences of those who have practiced for centuries using ways handed on to them as well as what is being developed now, using natural procedures and materials, where results are shown to be not harmful but successful. There is no class system, no ulterior motive, no effort to subjugate others, in natural healing. The sole aim is to restore people to good health naturally, and to keep them well. Good health knows no cultural boundaries.
