Last Week, on the long awaited finale of Project Runway, Gretchen Jones was named the winner and took home a prize of $100,000! But, much to the producers’ surprise the audience didn’t react with the enthusiasm that they’ve shown in the past. The majority of fans felt as though competing finalist, Mondo Guerra, showed higher talent and was robbed of the win he deserved. Since the airing of the final episode, online forums have been full of negative comments towards our local talent, Gretchen Jones and some have even refused to watch future seasons. Rumors are floating around that the competition was rigged and the producers chose to name Gretchen the winner, in order to gain more publicity. This allegation is hard to disprove as the judges voted Mondo off for the very things that they praised in earlier episodes, such as his bold patterns and over-the-top designs. While Nina claims she gave fair warning to Mondo, one can hardly count a comment she made in the last competition before fashion week. By then, his collection had already been completed. In addition, it was revealed that Heidi felt so strongly Mondo should win, she asked Tim Gunn, their well-respected mentor, to vouch for the designer. Tim, however, was usuccesful as Nina Garcia and Michael Kors held to their opinions. Tim says his feelings are best described by the words of a fan, “Mondo will do fabulously anyway, and Gretchen really needs the money.” In the end, the decision has been made which means congratulations are due to Gretchen Jones. Whether or not the nation agreed, it is no secret that the designer showed unique talent throughout each episode.
What do you think? Was the competition just for show or is Gretchen our new favorite designer?
