This drink was created and named at least indirectly after the 1969 Godfather Novel, which in turn spawned a 3 part major motion picture series in 1972. Here is an early printing of this drink:

There are very few discrepancies regarding this drinks recipe, by most accounts it calls for Scotch and Amaretto. It is difficult to determine what type of scotch though. Much like the ferrari, which calls for two italian spirits, Italian vermouth and Amaretto, this drink contains amaretto also and perhaps scotch was chosen because it is the “Godfather” of all spirits.
This drink is recognized by the International Bartender’s Association and The Official International Professional Bartender’s Organization. It is undetermined where this drink originated even though we are clear where the name derives from. There is no specific date associated with this drink, however, it is very likely this drink was named after the movie directly and indirectly after the book.
