Grim Sleeper photos released of possible murder victims, part 1 (video, photos)
The Los Angeles Police Department has released more than 100 photos of possible victims of Lonnie Franklin Jr., the suspect in the ‘Grim Sleeper’ murders. Franklin is charged with sexually assaulting and murdering 10 women in the LA area, but police believe he may have victimized even more women.
Authorities have recovered a multitude of photos and hundreds of hours of video taken by Franklin of women — including some who are partially or completely naked and in sexually graphic poses.
The LAPD released 100 of the photos in an attempt to try and identify the women in them. Females as young as teenagers appear in the photos, while some women appear to be in their 60s. Some are smiling, while some appear to be unconscious.
Franklin pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting and murdering 10 women between 1985 and 2007. According to CBS Crimesider, Franklin was nicknamed the Grim Sleeper because 14 years passed between murders. Nonetheless, some of the items found at Franklin’s home during the investigation lead police to believe he may have been active during that 14 year period and that more victims may exist.
Franklin, 58, is a mechanic, and a former city sanitation worker and LAPD garage attendant.
ABC News reports that although Franklin has not been charged with the shooting death of Thomas Steele, 36, police believe his death is connected to the other killings as well.
Franklin was arrested and charged with the LA area murders after being linked to the crimes using familial DNA. According to ABC, Franklin’s son had been arrested on a weapons charge and swabbed for DNA. When the sample was entered into the database of convicted felons, a partial match to the Grim Sleeper crime scenes was discovered. Thus began the investigation into Franklin’s son’s relatives, which resulted in the murder charge against the elder Franklin.
Anyone with information about the women in the photographs is asked to call 1-877-LAPD-24-7.
