On Thursday night, the boy wizard and his wizarding world began the final chapter of a franchise that has thrilled millions around the world. Combine just the midnight showings and Friday’s first full-day opening for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and you’ll see that trend is continuing.
The film brought in a franchise high $24 million for the Thursday night debuts, but it was the opening day Friday that truly brought in the big haul. Opening in 4,125 locations, Deathly Hallows racked in an estimated $61.2 million which would put it at number five on the all-time opening day list if it stands when final numbers are released.
It could rise up to the fourth spot if final numbers put it above $62 million for Friday which was earned by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
Part One of Deathly Hallows absolutely destroyed the closest competitor on Friday which was the Denzel Washington starring Unstoppable which opened just a week ago. It only brought in $4.0 for the day.
