It’s that time of year when the bikes are all snuggled away and they are having visions of twisties on which they wish they could play, but that doesn’t mean the maintenance stops there. One important item to think about, especially now, is the battery. Did you know that just starting your bike (most models) and letting it idle isn’t doing your battey much good? Motorcycle batteries (some motorcycles are excluded of course) for the most part do not charge just by idleing, but charge while under load (riding). With the snow on the ground and ice on the roads it is hard to get out and ride for alot of us, so we have an alternative. There are alot of good MOTORCYCLE battery chargers out there (notice I said MOTORCYCLE). These chargers are for motorcycles or other smaller battery size operated vehicles, they are a trickle charge system which is better for your 2 or 3 wheeled friend. There are ones that are made that have a self monitor installed so that when your battery is fully charged it will shut off, and when the battery needs charged it will turn on again. They will keep cycling like this till you physically remove them. And yes some also have a shut down type system installed if it stops working properly so there is no chance of battery damage or something even worse. All manufacturers have a specific type trickle charge system they recommend specifically for their bikes, so check with your local dealership what this might be, Then if you want head out to your local auto parts or larger multi line stores go ahead BUT make sure the system you are looking at is a trickle charge system for a motorcycle (can’t stress that enough). When there is a day when you can get out and take a ride please do so. This is the best way to charge your battery. It will also clean the cobwebs out of the bike and yourself! Here are a couple more items to check while you are out there taking the time to check your battery. Check you cables and connections (all that you can physically reach), check your tires and air pressure and turn your switch on and check all your lights. Keeping up on this now will get you on the road sooner when the weather is right for you. See you on the road.
