You’d think that as a freelance writer who covers spas and wellness, the names of massage therapists would roll off my tongue when friends, family or perfect strangers ask me for a recommendation. I’ve had the great fortune of experiencing massages and spa treatments from therapists, estheticians and wellness providers throughout North America. (I love my job!) I’m often sampling treatments at more than one spa during the same trip, so it’s rare that I get to visit the same provider more than once. On occasion, it leaves me longing for a massage therapist to call my very own.
So it was serendipitous that I met Jeannine Gettis while researching an article on couples massage for CNY Woman magazine (launching in January ’11). We connected instantly during our phone interview where Jeannine was informative and knowledgeable, offering many resources. When she offered me a massage session and a personal interview, I was eager to accept.
Jeannine Gettis is a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), and owner of Hearts Content Healing, who offers holistic massage therapy at two locations throughout Central New York. I enjoyed the gift of a highly customized session with Jeannine at Kelly’s Massage and Holistic Health Spa in Manlius, one of the locations where she sees clients each week. In-person, Jeannine exudes warmth and a calming personality. As we toured the Manlius spa, I found out just how dynamic Jeannine is: After admitting that I’m prouder of my writing prowess than I am of my photography skills, Jeannine offered to help me photograph the spa. “I’m a Photographer. I received my Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts and Photography.” It was my lucky day!
A graduate of the Finger Lakes School of Massage, Jeannine is a self-proclaimed massage geek. Her interest in massage therapy goes way beyond the physical act of giving massage – she loves the philosophy, kinesiology, anatomy and physiological aspects of massage too. But Heart’s Content Healing is more than massage therapy. Jeannine is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher who has been teaching private and group Hatha Vinyasa classes since 2001. She is also a Lotus Palm Thai Yoga Practitioner.
Jeannine is in practice to help her clients reduce stress and increase well-being in their lives. And if massage, Thai Yoga and Hatha yoga aren’t enough to bring balance to lives of her clients, Jeannine is a 1st Degree in the Usui Reiki System. A Reiki treatment consists of laying the hands on the body in a prescribed pattern and allowing the energy of life to flow through the hands to the person being treated.
When we finished our interview and photography lesson, it was time for my individualized massage. After Jeannine conducted a formal client intake that informed her of my preferences, allergies and sensitivities, the warm massage table awaited me. The first thing I noticed was the fleece sheets – the warmest, softest sheets I’ve ever slipped between. The massage included Eminence Organics add-ons for their soothing, healing and aroma-therapeutic properties. There was theLychee & Chestnut Firming Leg Treatment, the Sweet Red Rose Whip Moisturizer and the Eight Greens Whip Moisturizer. The Eminence Organic lineup is created with effective scientific combinations of fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbsand without parabens and other harsh chemicals. They are naturally scented and heavenly textured products that added yet another level of customization to my treatment.
When I look for a massage therapist to work with regularly, I look for two things: First and foremost, a highly skilled therapist. Second, I’m drawn to welcoming and nurturing types in whose presence I’ll feel well taken care of. Jeannine exceeded my expectations in both regards. Jeannine’s clients have the advantage of her considerable gifts of multiple trainings and modalities that she continues to add to her repertoire, each one informing and complementing the other. “Having a yoga practice and understanding stress and its effect on disease and knowing there is an alternative through presence and attention to the breathing, we can get that river of energy flowing again.”
During my massage, I experienced assisted stretching, range of motion stretches and a thoroughly relaxing and therapeutic massage. My specific areas of tension were addressed right on target. I would confidently recommend Jeannine to friends, family and those perfect strangers looking for a recommendation. I may have even found a massage therapist to call my very own.
