Most children have an activity they enjoy. They may love to paint, draw, dance, write, cook, bake, sculpt or just simply be creative! As parents, we have to find the right activity for our child; with budget restraints these days, we may be forced to look for ways to enroll our children in programs that are within our means.
That’s where the City of Henderson Parks and Rec Department comes in. When you visit their activity sections, you can sign in or select the guest button to browse. This opens a wealth of possibilities. If you click on search, select activity and then activity search from the drop-down menu. You’ll see the various categories that you can browse through to find just the right program for your child. If on the other hand, you have a Henderson Happenings and know the number of your child’s favorite activity, then you can browse that way as well.
This time of year, some activities are already off the chart, being full or cancelled for this current session, but come December, registration is accepted for January classes. Some of those will include children’s (youth) cooking, karate, dance, ballet, gymnastics and more.
During this Holiday season, extra programs have been offered at the various Rec Centers – please be aware that not all programs are offered at all centers! It depends upon the instructor and their selection of classes. You can find special classes where child care is provided, such as Cookie and Candy Creation (children learn and play for the day – lunch included – while parents do their holiday shopping), Santa’s Workshop (where children make and wrap a gift while parents go shopping), Letters to Santa (at Valley View), The Great Elf Escape (where children have fun while their parents go shopping), You can have your child (or your pet) have their pictures taken with Santa! Whitney Ranch also currently has an ongoing “Santa’s Phone Line” program, where your children can talk to the “Big Man” himself and tell him what they want for Christmas. The whole family can go on a “Holiday Lights Tour,” courtesy of Whitney Ranch at very reasonable cost. Another parent/child event is “Hop on Bird Mobile” where children and a parent go bird-watching at a preserve – educational and a family outing!
Whitney Ranch has a “Cooking for Kids” class, currently running and offered again for the Winter session. Here, we prepare child-friendly snacks and gift items, in and out of the community kitchen (in the same room). Children (aged 4-8) are encouraged to cook and bake cooperatively as they learn measurements and techniques each week. Enrollment is limited, so act quickly! At other Rec Centers, you can find classes such as Mini Cake Decorators or Crazy for Cookies. All classes have limited enrollment, and all are a lot of fun plus a learning experience for your child.
There is no lack of selection, since it’s limited only to the instructor’s imagination. You are sure to find something to interest your child at any of the Henderson Rec Centers. Please take a look today!
