Located in the Brandermill area, ‘A Taste of Italy’ restaurant in Midlothian has been a neighborhood institution since 1999. The business is owned and operated by the Parlanti family and they offer a wide variety of Italian recipes on a daily basis – including many traditional preparations and others that are uniquely creative.
Although still in the same general area, they recently moved into a newly-constructed building, which represents a significant improvement over the previous location. The food has always been tasty and skillfully prepared, the prices are very reasonable and the service attentive, friendly and professional. But now the ambience has been dramatically improved, bringing a new level of enjoyment to the ‘Taste of Italy’ dining experience.
Nicely decorated, with a combination of booths and tables, the space is divided into two sections by arched entryways – the main dining room and a more secluded area at the rear, which can be used for either private parties or to provide additional seating on busier nights. Not surprisingly, the dining room has a distinctive Italian/Mediterranean feel to it. The color scheme generates a comfortable, relaxing, friendly tone, which is further enhanced by the competent and attentive wait staff.
The huge menu seems to include virtually every traditional Italian recipe, ranging from simple red sauce dishes like pasta and meatballs to more complex preparations like Veal Piccata, Chicken Marsala, Shrimp Scampi and many others. There are also a number of seafood dishes and a wide range of interesting and appealing pasta presentations to choose from. In addition, they offer Pizza, Stromboli and Calzones. The pizza is truly outstanding and is arguably the best to be found south of the James River.
However, the real prizes to be discovered at ‘A Taste of Italy‘ are found in the nightly specials. Prepared with talent and imagination, the chef skillfully creates a wide variety of interesting, well-prepared dishes that please the palate and leave customers looking forward to their next visit. As an example, the Pork Osso Buco is outstanding. A more reasonably priced pork shank, rather than the traditional veal shank, is braised and cooked to melt-in-your-mouth tenderness in a light, fragrant and flavorful tomato/vegetable sauce that further enhances both the presentation and the taste.
Reasonably-priced, excellently-prepared food served in a comfortable, nicely decorated space by a well-trained and efficient wait staff – this is a restaurant that you should not miss.
