These are the words of a wise man, inspired by the Spirit of Wisdom:
Now all has been heard;
Here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
For this is the whole [duty] of man.
For God will bring every deed into judgment,
Including every hidden thing,
Whether it is good or evil.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14, NIV
The man of wisdom, with wisdom from the Spirit, observed that life was meaningless apart from reverence and obedience to God. Whether the pursuit was power, pleasure, prudence, or prosperity, it is all futility without reverence and obedience.
Therefore, the wisdom needed to be ready for judgment day is given in these words. The whole duty of humanity, and the standard by which all will be judged, is perfectly given. Good and evil are perfectly made known:
Good is reverence and obedience towards God. Evil is irreverence and disobedience towards God.
Every deed is to be done in reverence and obedience to God. EVERY DEED. Not one thing should be done that God has not commanded or permitted. Not one deed should be done with disregard to God’s uniqueness as Creator and Master. It for him and his pleasure that all exists and continues to exist.
Every hidden intention and imagination should be done in reverence and obedience. The God who sees in secret will reward or punish openly. Secret thoughts will be made public. Hidden motivations will be shown. Because the mind and heart are God’s, every creature should offer them to God the Creator, and use them as the Creator intended in their creation.
Who can stand before the Creator guiltless? Only those who are forgiven through the salvation of God’s son. Once forgiven, every man and woman may fear God’s Spirit and keep his commandments, and fulfill their whole duty. When this is so, they may be perfectly pleasing in the sight of God for the Day of Judgment, and they may know that this is so in the present.
