It’s the week and a half before Christmas and there are plenty of events in which you would want to dress up…and knock everybody’s socks off! We Seattlites are known for music and the arts, for not being afraid to be ourselves. So let yourself go a little bit this year. If you have always wanted to know how to vamp up your own items, this is the place to look. Have an old dress and fur coat that have been hanging there for years now? It’s time for them to have their night out! We are about to make your look absolutely dazzling!
Couture looks are about combining expensive with vintage with ethereal with a splash of WOW. So…how do you do that?
Step one. Dig out that black dress. It looks plain to start with. But it won’t be for long!
Step Two. Pull out that old fur coat. The one people have told you to sell off to some vintage store somewhere. This is an item you definitely want to keep and, of course, take out on special nights!
Step Three. Go to a fabric store and purchase a few yards of gauzy toile in either black, cream or soft caramel. Don’t be stingy! Toile can be bought for a mere .29 cents a yard! Don’t worry. You won’t have to sew or anything. We are just going to get creative.
Step Four. While your at the fabric store, pick up a roll of black or caramel ribbon that is at least 3 inches thick.
Step Five. Clean up a pair of dazzling stilettos. Maybe intentionally bring out a pair you just haven’t worn in a long time, or a pair you wouldn’t usually use.
Step Six. Pair the dress and jacket together and then take your toile (approximately 6-8 yards of it) and tie it into a big, loose bow around your neck. Let the rest hang down. Position the bow slightly to the side and let it pop out of your fur coat. This is the element of WOW in your new gorgeous outfit!
Step Seven. (Optional) Take the 3 inch ribbon you got and cut off two lengths, at about 24 inches each. Then put on your cute heels and tie the bow around the middle part and make a big statement bow on both heels. If this is a bit too much for you, just let the heels speak for themselves. But if your a fashion-on-the-edge type, go for the gold!
And there you go! You have a to-die-for couture outfit from your own items! All it cost you was the few dollars you spent at the fabric store for things you could use again and again in a hundred different ways! A brilliant way to be “couture-ized” and budget friendly!
