If you’re the type of traveller dreaming of wintry magic, twinkling fairy lights, snuggling up to your loved one, lots of snow, and below zero temps then Lapland’s ICEHOTEL is the perfect extreme winter destination.
Deep inside the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, in the quaint town of Jukkasjarvi, sits the fairy-tale ICEHOTEL. The idea of the hotel was born thirteen years ago out of an igloo housing artworks and since then the crystal-clear ice of the nearby River Torne has provided a stunningly exclusive project every year. This area has profound forests, frozen lakes and the astonishing Northern Lights. A more traditional activity are day trips on sleds pulled by Huskies. Some of which can be over-night excursions, which means more chances to see the Northern Lights, and also the truly unforgettable experience of driving your own Husky sledge across a vast frozen lake at sunrise. Other activities include Hunting, Fishing, Snow driving, Horse Riding and Skiing.
The hotel is constructed each year using blocks of ice taken from the frozen Torne River each winter and frozen for use the following year, it is rebuilt and a little differently each time. You walk into a grand hallway complete with reception desk made of ice, and sparkling ice chandeliers. The bedrooms come with ice beds and arm chairs covered in reindeer pelts. Since the temperatures are of course well below freezing, guests of the ice hotel in Sweden will be given a collection of gear meant to offer some protection for the duration of their stay. Full jumpsuits made of beaver nylon are issued to guests of the ice hotel in Sweden, as are insulated body bags first developed for astronauts walking on the moon.
The Hotel bar is an Absolut Ice Bar, offering an enormous assortment of flavored vodka in glasses made of ice. There is of course a warmer option, the hotel also has cabin accommodations, a warm bar where the staff take great enjoyment in asking if you’d like ice with your drink all the while grinning like Chesire cats!
All water that is used in taps and bathrooms comes straight from the river which is one of the cleanest rivers on our planet. The Torne River is the most vital piece of the system at the Swedish Ice Hotel, without it there would be no hotel at all. But it’s not only the hotel in Sweden that benefits from the river, the ice is also shipped across the world, to places including, London, Stockholm and Tokyo to build the Absolut Ice Bars that now inhabit many capital cities.
Another reason people go to Jukkasjarvi is to see the Northern lights. The ICEHOTEL is located in the middle of the ring-shaped area known as auroral oval, the area around the Earth’s magnetic north pole where Northern lights mainly appear. The month of January has the highest number of clear days and lowest average cloudiness, making the necessary prerequisite to be able to view the northern lights to its full effect.
Don’t be misled that winter is the only time for fun! The summer in Lapland is intense. Bring your sleep shades because the nights are as bright as the days as the sun blazes to life and burns for 100 days and nights without setting, melting snow and ice and transforming the countryside into a vibrant green land. Summer in Jukkasjärvi is from June to August and offers river rafting, hunting and fishing.
Winter season is from December to March.
