On Tuesday night, Americans were treated to the latest fashion reality show called, The Fashion Show: Ultimate Collection. The show hosted by Iman and Isaac Mizrahi, is actually in its second season. The show’s first season was hosted by former Destiny’s Child member, Kelly Rowland, who along with Mizrahi did not connect to the audience or have on-air chemistry. The Fashion Show can be seen on Bravo and is an attempt to replace Project Runway which moved from the network to Lifetime Television last year.
The main characters on The Fashion Show is a eclectic mix of fashion heavyweights. Iman, supermodel and owner of Iman Cosmetics, is the primary host of this show, similar to Heidi Klum on Project Runway. Mizrahi, originally from Brooklyn, plays the role of the encouraging critic, a combination of Tim Gunn and Michael Kors. Harper’s Bazaar’s Laura Brown is the new judge, similar to Project Runway’s Nina Garcia…the exception is that Brown offers up an Australian accent. It seems the show will also have a revolving guest judge and the first episode featured, New York designer Rachael Roy…who in my opinion really seemed very soft-spoken on camera, possibly due to the giant personalities of Iman and Isaac Mizrahi .
The Fashion Show is different from Project Runway due to designers competing in two teams, known as “fashion houses.” The designers create individual looks that become one of two collections. Therefore, allowing the designers to work with their competitors to win as a group, but then be judged against one another. The main task of designers was to create a collection for Iman, which will showcase her “bubbly and prickly” personality. If not imtimidating enough, Iman let the designers know she has worked with the best designers…including Prada and John Galliano, therefore she doesn’t want to see crappy clothes! After grappling with the fact that Iman was not only a fashion icon, a legend, but also married to David Bowie (a style icon in his own right), the fashion houses named, the House of Emerald Syx and the House of Nami started their collections.
Last night’s stand out self-proclaimed bitch was designer Calvin Tran, who argued with Iman about the colors gold vs. yellow. After creating a horrible bright yellow, rhinestone dress, Tran stated that he thought Iman would look beautiful in gold, she affirmed to him the color of the dress was not gold…but yellow. He bantered that the difference between yellow and gold, was “Tomato, tomato”. Iman her still-strong Somalian accent, sturnly told Tran, “It’s not a tomato…it’s a yellow!” Due to the aweful-ness of his dress, Tran was placed up for the classic reality show “elimination”. Iman stated his dress was “a fashion emergency and it needs to be evacuated.” Classic.
All in all, The Fashion Show has good designers and was mildly entertaining . Tran was not eliminated at the end, but I believe he’ll be around for a few more episodes…if not only to aggrevate the other designers and create ratings. I definitely predict a lot of backstabbing, arguments, and tears…and what else do viewers of a reality show really want? I will be attending The Fashion Show again next week…I won’t be evacuating just yet.
“The Fashion Show” airs on Bravo, Tuesday nights at 10pm.
