Cornell University, the consensus No. 1 NCAA Division I wrestling team in the country, topped sixth-ranked Central Michigan, 24-10, in front of a sold-out crowd at Friedman Wrestling Center in Ithaca, New York Friday night.
The visiting Chippewas got off to a good start, winning the first two bouts of the evening, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. However, Cornell then won the next seven matches, with the Big Red’s Cam Simaz, ranked No. 1 at 197 pounds, getting the pin. Central Michigan heavyweight Jarod Trice — who will be wrestling at the 2010 NWCA All-Star Classic Sunday — earned a decision over his Cornell opponent, but it wasn’t enough to make up the deficit.
“I was nervous going into it,” Cornell head coach Rob Koll told TheOpenMat.com’s Libe Slope after the match. “They are a really tough team and we have not wrestled well historically in the first match out. So I was optimistic but in the back of my mind, I have to admit I had a little worry. Then when we lost the first two, I thought, ‘Oh no, it’s happening again’. But we got it together and after that, I thought the guys looked fantastic. I’m glad we got out of there with no injuries.”
