This drink is not as recent as some would think. Information regarding this drink on sources such as wikipedia are absolutely false. Here is an early printing of this drink:

“INCREDIBLE HULK – 2 oz. Hennessy cognac 3 oz. Hpnotiq Chill both beverages before use. Add Hpnotiq to a cocktail glass. Then add the Hennessy cognac.”
This drink has made it’s way into modern american drinking culture with the aid of a brilliant name. It is unclear however, how this name came about. It is likely the “H” in Hennessey and the “H” in Hpnotiq played a role, but the larger role was is played by this drinks color when mixed.
All early literature indicates this drink is served layered, then stirred if desired. Even Hpnotiq themselves claim this as seen here:

There is no hard evidence as to where this drink originates and hpnotiq does not claim to be the proprietor of this drink.
