Top contenders have been announced for the 2010 Midlands wrestling tournament, which takes place at Welsh-Ryan Arena at Northwestern University on Dec. 29-30.
This prestigious tournament, now in its 48th year, brings together the top collegiate and post-collegiate wrestlers in the nation.
In the field at this year’s Midlands are 97 nationally-ranked competitors, including four ranked No. 1 in the country at their weight class and five more ranked No. 2, according to the Dec. 21 Amateur Wrestling News rankings.
The top wrestlers in each weight class include:
- 125 lbs: Matt McDonough, University of Iowa
- 133: Tyler Graff, University of Wisconsin
- 141: Jimmy Kennedy, University of Illinois
- 149: Kevin LeValley, Bucknell
- 157: Steve Fittery, American
- 165: Andrew Howe, Wisconsin
- 174: Jon Reader, Iowa State
- 184: Grant Gambrall, Iowa
- 197: Trevor Brandvold, Wisconsin
- Hwt: Zach Rey, Lehigh
Only the top eight wrestlers in each weight class were unveiled in the pretournament seedings released by Northwestern Wednesday. Final seeding for the event will be determined on Tuesday, Dec. 28.
Live coverage of the 2010 Midlands will be available from Takedown Radio (TDR). The Big Ten Network will provide tape-delay broadcast of the finals Saturday, Jan. 8 at 3 p.m. CST.
