As first reported by Newsday this morning, the Islanders fired coach Scott Gordon and replaced him on an interim basis with Jack Capuano. The Isles are in the midst of a 10-game losing streak and 4-10-3 overall, tied with Edmonton for the fewest points in the NHL.
“When we’re in a situation we’re in right now — we’ve lost 10 games in a row — sometimes you have to go with your gut and make decisions that are tough,” general manager Garth Snow said during a conference call.
More on this later as the picture is still coming together. My initial reaction is that this decision surprised me. The Islanders were losing – and regressing – but continued to play hard for Gordon. The young core has been painfully slow to develop and bigger issues are beneath the surface.
Katie Strang also conducted the first interview with Gordon as ex head coach. Gordon will now serve as a special advisor to Snow.
