Only open a few months, Kupros Bistro in midtown Sacramento is off to a good start. Kupros is housed in a historic craftsman style building with an impressive use of woodwork and a gorgeous stained glass ceiling that covers the amply sized bar. The atmosphere is casual and boisterous downstairs and sophisticated upstairs.
Kupros is going for the gastro pub experience, offering a wide array of creative, upscale twists on traditional pub grub. Roasted bone marrow served with toast, fried pickles with house made tartar sauce, gourmet macaroni and cheese, and french fries covered in short rib gravy are just a few of the unique offerings. There are also sandwiches, salads, seafood, steaks, and pastas. There is an emphasis on high quality, seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and it pays off.
In the bistro’s short history, they have already changed chefs and you get a since that Kupros is still trying to find its legs, but the new chef (of Spataro fame) and friendly staff seem to be taking it in the right direction. While a little pricey considering the portion size, it is definitely worth a try. The full bar is a sight to behold with inventive cocktails served under a canopy of stained glass. The food is solid and gets points for the creativity.
