It took three games, but for the first time this season the Los Angeles Lakers allowed less than 100 points as they shellacked the Golden State Warriors 107-83 on Halloween night. It is hard to believe that the two-time defending champions held the Warriors to such a low point total considering they scored an average of 120 points in their first two games while the Lakers have allowed an average of 108 points in their first two games.
It was probably a matter of time until the Lakers start to play lockdown defense. The Lakers D really meant business last night as the Warriors only scored 14 points in the first quarter and 19 in the fourth quarter. The Lakers were fortunate that second-year stud point guard Stephen Curry didn’t play last night due to a sprained ankle. Without Curry, leading scorer Monta Ellis couldn’t pick up the slack as he was only held to 20 points.
Even though the Warriors are a crazy good offensive team, their defense is still horrific and they still don’t have the height or the killer instinct to challenge a team like the Lakers. David Lee is pretty good, but he vastly lacks the size to go up against Pau Gasol, who is three inches taller than Lee which he was shut out and grabbed only three rebounds. Andris Biedrins has upside, but he has shown that he has not been durable in the last two seasons. He also got mauled by Odom, although, Odom has been showing up on a consistent basis this season because he has averaged 16 points and 13 rebounds a game.
The Lakers offense has never been an issue as they have scored over 100 points in each of their first three games. Their offense always scored enough points, but their defense in the first half of their first two games had a difficult time making stops, although, when you score as often as the Lakers do you never need to make a lot of stops in the beginning. Now people will think that they have a good defense again. The Lakers need to play well defensively for another two or three games and then they will be considered a stout defense.
Life is good for the Lakers. They now 3-0 for the second time in three seasons, Kobe Bryant is scoring 24 points per game and is accepting less playing time and Gasol is continuing to put up spectacular numbers averaging 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. The bench also has a new nickname called ‘The Renegades’ because their bench is really good. Steve Blake has already made a clutch three in the season-opener and Matt Barnes has been a good edition. Plus, Shannon Brown and Sasha Vujacic haven’t choked yet.
They have only played three games and I have already accepted that they are going to win the NBA title this year. That just makes me want to hate them more.
