The last, par 3 hole at Jackson Park Golf Course (6401 S. Richards Drive in Chicago, Illinois) is the most difficult, par 3 hole on this course. This hole’s, course handicap is 13, as compared to 16, 18, 17 and 15 for Jackson Park’s, other, par 3 holes. (This Chicago Park District golf course has five, par 3 holes.)
From the men’s teeing ground, the distance to the putting green’s center is 212 yards; from the women’s teeing ground, it is 202 yards. These teeing grounds are close to East Marquette Drive. In fact, to get from the sixteenth hole’s putting green to the seventeenth hole’s teeing grounds; golfers must cross East Marquette Drive.
The seventeenth hole’s fairway is moderately wide, running west to east. (The water fountain that is ten feet away is always operational during late spring, summer, and early autumn.) The fairway becomes slightly narrower as golfers approach the putting green. Along the right side from the teeing ground to 25 yards from the putting green, trees border the fairway.
A marked, bird and butterfly sanctuary is along this hole’s, right side. Although set about 20 yards from the fairway, some golfers hook their balls into this thick rough. In the summer when this area is fully grown, golfers will discover that finding their golf balls in this area is very difficult. Of course, local rules prohibit hitting out of this area.
This hole’s putting green is elevated 1-2 feet above the fairway’s level. On the front are two sand bunkers, one on each side. The left sand bunker is smaller than the right one. Severe breaks exist on this moderate size green to challenge golfers. Chip shots from off the green will usually roll to the back, or roll completely off.
Besides the challenges of the sand bunkers and severe breaks on the putting green, golfers must drive from the teeing ground with a long iron or fairway wood (Remember, it is 212 yards.) to reach the green in regulation. Golfers must hit high, arcing shots with backspin. Applying backspin to long irons (2-irons and 3-irons) is difficult. Applying backspin to fairway woods, in this case, 3-woods, 4-woods or 5-woods, is impossible. As you now realize, Jackson Park Golf Course’s, seventeenth hole deserves its #13, course hole handicap.
