Lunar eclipse 2010: Year begins and ends with blue moon, lunar eclipses (photos, videos)
2010 ends as it began, with a lunar eclipse. As many people in the Northern Hemisphere marveled at the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see a total lunar eclipse occur at the same time as the winter solstice, on December 20, 2010, we are reminded that it wasn’t the year’s first lunar eclipse. On December 31, 2009, the world welcomed the new year with another rare celestial event: a blue moon and a lunar eclipse. 2010 welcomed additional celestial phenomenon such as the Perseids and Geminid meteor showers. The events have some wondering if the events hold any meaning. You may see photos and videos of the blue moon, both lunar eclipses and the meteor showers in the links below. You may also view a time lapse video showing the lunar eclipse from December 20, 2010 in the video player to the left.
Celestial events and superstition have walked hand in hand for thousands of years. The ancient Chinese feared that a dragon was swallowing the moon when an eclipse occurred. Some cultures fear that an eclipse is a sign of bad luck or an omen; some stay inside to protect themselves from whatever doom is approaching and god-forbid you should give birth under a lunar eclipse for surely there is something cursed about your child. You may read more about the ancients and their views of a lunar eclipse at Sacred Text: Moon Lore: Moon Superstitions III. Lunar Eclipses http://www.sacred-texts.com/astro/ml/ml17.htm
Though many will read into these celestial signs considering that a lunar eclipse marked the beginning of 2010 and its close, others feel that lunar eclipses are simply a natural phenomenon that is beautiful to behold and spectacular to witness.
What the sky holds for 2011 remains to be seen, but if 2010 is any indication; star gazers and astronomy buffs may be in for an exciting year.
