MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow stepped up in a very bold way last night in her inteview w/ Austin Goolsbee. She only had a chance to ask a few questions and she ended with a bombshell question: “What about the 99ers”.
I was stunned – sat right up and thought “right-on, Rachel!’
This is a 1 minute clip; for those who don’t understand the 99ers issue and what the President has NOT done for 4.5 (soon to be 8 million) people, please take a minute and watch the video on the left. The response by Obama’s administration is totally short-sighted, cruel and unacceptable.
The American 99ers Union issued a press release yesterday and is calling on all unemployed to come out of the shadows and get involved in this fight – a fight that will impact every single unempleyed worker in the country at some point next year. Here is a portion of their press release:

*** The proposed 13 month extension of unemployment insurance, does not include the majority of America’s Unemployed. As Washington debates tax cuts for the wealthy, the Nation’s longest termed unemployed suffer as the jobless recovery drags on ***
VOTE NO ON ANY PROPOSED LEGISLATION that DOES NOT include an extension of unemployment insurance beyond the current 99 week maximum. Only legislation including the 99ers** will allow for ALL unemployed Americans to immediately take part in the recovery and get back to work ASAP. Should the Country make a short term investment that will result in finally getting Americans back towork, or a long term investment paying for food stamps, welfare and other Government Programs that will need to be created for the millions who will never find their way back to work unless the right thing finally is done. [American 99ers Union press relese dated Dec. 10, 2010]
Yesterday, the Huffington Post writer, Arthur Delaney reported the following:
“It’s totally unbalanced. I think unemployment shouldn’t be considered a concession they give to us,” Re. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) told HuffPost after Democrats symbolically rejected the tax deal. “I think we should have kept fighting them on it.”
As I wrote in my article yesterday, Senator mark Udall (D-CO) has stated he will stand with Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in opposition to the President’s compromise which gives tax cuts to the wealthy in exchange for extending the filing deadline for federal U.I. benefits for a period of 13 months. Please call Sen. Udall and thank him for standing strong, but remind him that the 99ers are suffering [303.650.7820].
Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO), on the other hand has stated he will support the President’s deal, despite the fact that 4.5 million 99ers (26,000 in his home state of Colorado) are being left out. Please call Sen. Bennet and remind him that WE voted for him and the rest of the Democrats to stand up for us in Washington – not for the interests of the wealthy donors who were ultimately respnsible for him being elected – not with their vote, but with their big money interests.
You can reach Sen. Bennet at 303.455.7600; you can reach both Senators and any other member of Congress (including VP Biden) by calling 1-888-245-0215.
I’ve received a few comments that I think are important and point out the real need to get involved by contacting the media – local and national – as well as members of Congress. We are heading into the final hour of this fight. We still have a chance to win; soon that chance – our last chance – will be gone. Wake up America. This fight is about the unemployed – but it is also very much about the middle class:
” KELLY: why does the media keep saying the 99er’s will lose benefits? They have NO benefits for months, some even 8-9 months…” Terrence Kiellman
“The Republicans are stating that the 99ers are included wich is incorrect. It just shows that the Republicans have been using unemployment matters to get their own agenda passed when, in fact, they have no idea what is going on with the unemployed. Its up to us to educate them. Sad but true; almost all communication has been on the Dems…You all need to educate the Republicans as well.” Rhonda Taylor
The people who have not yet reached the maximum 99 weeks (currently 93 weeks in CO) will receive federal U.I. benefits with the proposed extension; that is about 7 million people (2 million would be ‘cut off’ by the end of this month). That is the rhetoric in the media and it is true. What most of the media does not report is that the long(est) term unemployed get nothing out of this ‘deal’.
What Congress has done in the past – and what has been proposed again – is to simply extend the filing deadlines for EUC (federal UI benefits). The helps keep things ‘fair – so that the more recently unemployed workers have the same ’99 weeks’ as the long-term unemployed have gotten.
The problem is that in addition to the 4.5 (or more) who have already exhausted the maximum 99 weeks, there will be another 4 million people who will also exhaust the maximum 99 weeks in the coming few months. So, all said and done, in the first 4 months or so of 2011, there will be 8 million people people who have exhausted all U.I. benefits (and will be true ’99ers’). That is one half of the 15 million unemployed. So, while this proposal helps 7 million people, about 4 million of them will join the ranks of 99ers in the first part of the year.
This market is unbelievable. If there were jobs, people would be working – they are not trying (or wanting) to just sit on U.I. benefits, contrary to what the media and many politicians want to report. Eight million people is ALOT of people to have no job and no source of income – in an environment where everyone admits the jobs are not coming back any time soon. This recession is going to leave many middle class workers in poverty – permanently.
Man Freezes to Death Inside Car: Tolson was a logger and apparently had fallen on hard times and was living out of his vehicle until he could get work.
PLEASE get involved.
Join in the American 99ers Union latest action to push members of Congress to NOT support the President’s compromise without including help for the long term unemployed via adding a Tier 5 to the U.I. benefits package.
Please call, fax, email. If you’d like your letter or email to be hand-delivered to Sen. Sanders , please submit your story! You will find information on how to do this by using the link below.
