This winter seasonal is chocked full of toasty flavor. “Born of dark and cold and snow in the marrow of the northeast’s longest night…” so sayeth the website. It has all the color and deep roasted bitter chocolate and coffee notes of a robust stout, yet the light body and feel of a lager. It finishes slightly watery, but, it is a lager after all. With all the roasted flavor present up front, one might feel a bit let down not having that strong stout finish that sticks to the ribs. Look at it this way– you probably are not going to enjoy a twelve-pack of Guiness Extra Stout around a crackling winter fire with an old friend shooting the breeze. Well, you might, but you probably wouldn’t feel very well afterwards.
Magic Hat Howl Winter Lager is available in Winston-Salem at Total Wine & More in six-packs and Magic Hat seasonal sampler twelve-packs, and also in the seasonal singles section. It is most likely available at most local grocers as well, Magic Hat being one of the larger craft brewers in the U.S. For more on Magic Hat Brewing Company and Howl Winter Lager, click here. *SRM stands for Standard Reference Method and is how beer color is measured in the United States. Commercial and larger breweries use a device called a spectrophotometer to make these measurements. Smaller outfits and homebrewers are probably not going to be able to afford such sophistication as this, so here is an example of a color chart provided by the State of Franklin Homebrewers. (65 is pretty darn dark)
