Shortly after 10 PM Wednesday night, someone hurled a Molotov cocktail into a home at Manistique and Linville on the city’s east side. Soon, fire was racing through the home of Russell Marcilis, 67, and his wife Marie. Russell gallantly led his wife to safety, but died of injuries sustained in doing so. Marie Marcilis has only minor injuries.
Neighbors saw several people outside the house just before the fire started.
Relatives believe that these people targeted the wrong house. The dead man’s son said a neighbor of his parents was involved in a feud with an unknown group of people.
Investigators will want to have a talk with that neighbor, as arson investigators search for evidence confirming that a firebomb was indeed used.
If the suspect tossed the firebomb into the wrong house, he will be guilty of arson and felony murder under the doctrine of transferred intent, even though he did not intend to hurt the Marcilis family.
