Mayor Akmad Ampatuan, the former member of the powerful Ampatuan clan who has now backed the rival Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu, was the target of a motorcycle bomb attack.
The Mayor and his escorts were uninjured in the blast which occurred in Sharif Aguak town just minutes after Ampatuan’s car passed the rigged motorcycle.
The bomb blast injured two innocent bystanders.
According to Ampatuan, Mayor of Datu Salibo town, he received an anonymous text message warning him of a possible bomb attack but Ampatuan says he paid it little heed. The Mayor told reporters that the text said, ‘mayor, be careful because they will plant a bomb for you.’
Ampatuan left the clan in May to support Mangudadatu. Many of the Ampatuan clan are accused of being behind the bloody Maguindanao massacre that killed 57 nearly one year ago.
Many of the 196 people accused of the murders are still at large and the public is demanding quicker government action as the first anniversary approaches.
