What’s old is new again with current yarns and new retro-inspired designs. Modern Knits Vintage Style is filled with classic designs of the ‘30’s, ‘40’s and ‘50’s, known as the “Golden Age of Knitting”. The attractive format of the book has the look and feel of an old scrapbook. It is like a walk down memory lane with a new twist.
Each design has a photograph of the original vintage design and one of the new remakes. There are in-depth instructions that will result in a professional and tailored looking garment. Sixteen different designers are credited for the 24+ projects.
There are sketches, pattern notes, dimensional diagrams (finished measurements), charts and pattern notes to help you achieve fresh, period style results. Sizes for the patterns range from small to large and 2x-lg for some patterns.
“Jaqueline Bouvier Stole” is a shawl designed by Franklin Habit, that is knit in two halves and stitched together using the kitchener stitch. The “Circle Skirt” can be knit (Gretchen Funk) or crocheted (Ellen Brys) with very similar finished appeal.
There are curve-hugging sweaters by Michele Rose Orne, Kristin Spurkland and Anna Bel. There is a hat by Annie Modesitt. Gloves complimented every outfit during those decades. Sharon Hilchie knits a pair of “Sunday Gloves”. The patterns include scarves, belts, socks , pencil skirts and a capelet (popular again). A “Moss Ross Brooch” for a touch of romance can be knit, or knit and felted.
Voyageur Press presented the book to me and I am happy to give Modern Knits Vintage Style, published October 2010, to a reader. Please leave a comment about what yarn you like to knit with most and why. “I enjoy knitting with yarn I have dyed and spun. It is one of a kind.” This “Giveaway” is open to US residents only. Comments will be accepted until next Thursday November 25. I will then post and contact the name of the winner from the random drawing.
One comment per person. Please be sure to leave your email address in this format name(at)gmail(dot)com within the comment.
