Based on the DC comic, Jonah is an ex-Confederate soldier turned bounty hunter who is hired to find and eliminate his old nemesis, Turnbull, the man who scarred him for life and left him with the ability to speak to the dead. On a demented quest to exact revenge for the Confederacy, Turnbull is assembling a super-weapon capable of destroying entire cities and Jonah is the last hope for stopping him.
Josh Brolin (Jonah), John Malkovich (Turnbull), Megan Fox (Lilah), Michael Fassbender (Burke), Will Arnett (Lt. Grass), John Gallagher Jr. (Lt. Evan), Tom Wopat (Col. Slocum), Michael Shannon (Doc), Wes Bentley (Lusk).
Jonah Hex starts off a bit strangely but in doing so provides good history and background for those who have never read the comics. Once the actual film begins things get even stranger when we find Hex has the ability to revive and speak to the dead and frequently has visions that don’t add much to the story. The western also blends some unusual elements like an unexplained weapon that appears somewhat futuristic. Portraying Jonah as both a superhero with strange abilities and an average guy wanting a regular life presents an interesting contrast throughout the film.
Acting really felt mediocre in this one with Brolin delivering a mild performance. Malkovich was less twisted than usual and felt lacking of energy. Fox was good but so underused she couldn’t contribute much to the film. The rest of the supporting cast felt lackluster.
Camera work was poor with several scenes being extremely dark and difficult to see. Action scenes involved fast cuts and movement and were also difficult to watch. Sets and backgrounds were minimal but good. Dialogue was somewhat flat, emotionless, and lacked energy. Sound and soundtrack were well done.
Overall Jonah Hex was a disappointment. Poor technical quality coupled with mediocre performances and a general lack of energy left a film that felt like it had a lot of potential but never delivered. Fans of the comic may find this one entertaining while others will be disappointed with the lack of depth and energy.
With mild sexual content, disturbing images, some blood and gore, and violence this should actually be fine for teens and above.
Jonah Hex is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
