Creasy is an ex-CIA operative turned alcoholic personal bodyguard for a 10-year-old girl in Mexico City. When the girl is kidnapped Creasy finds fuel and redemption in his anger. Realizing the girl brought him back from the brink and gave him purpose again, he becomes determined to destroy anyone involved with her kidnapping.
Denzel Washington (Creasy), Dakota Fanning (Pita), Marc Anthony (Samuel), Radha Mitchell (Lisa), Christopher Walken (Rayburn), Giancarlo Giannini (Manzano), Rachel Ticotin (Mariana), Jesus Ochoa (Fuentes), Mickey Rourke (Jordan).
Man on Fire begins by setting up the plot and providing some character background before moving into the story. Though Creasy is presented as an alcoholic, he doesn’t appear to be as consumed as the film would like us to believe. The point is soon forgotten as the action picks up with the kidnapping of Pita. As the intrigue and suspense build the film moves along at an ever increasing pace and Creasy finds his way back to being very good at killing. The film finishes with a nice, feel good ending that makes the violence seem a bit less pointless and gives the film a bit of depth.
Washington was on his game in this one delivering nicely throughout the film. Fanning also did nicely as did Mitchell. Anthony and Walken fit their roles nicely and did well. Rourke was a big surprise delivering a coherent and solid performance.
Camera work was okay though some of the action scenes were difficult to follow. Sets and backgrounds were well done and fit the film. Effects were action based and nicely done with fair attention to detail. Dialogue, sound, and soundtrack were also well done and the film appears to have had a good sized budget.
Overall Man on Fire is a nicely done Action Thriller with a solid plot and good overall technical quality. Fans of Washington or the genre will probably enjoy this one quite a bit.
With plenty of graphic violence, foul language, and gore save this for older teens and above.
Man on Fire is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
