Frank Castle was a normal guy until his family was killed. Now, he is the Punisher. One man dedicated to doing what the police can’t and eliminating, with extreme prejudice, any thug he can find. Currently battling mob boss Billy Russoti, the conflict leaves Russoti disfigured prompting him to transform into Jigsaw. With renewed vigor the Punisher and Jigsaw are about to collide in a hail of bullets.
Ray Stevenson (Frank), Dominic West (Billy/Jigsaw), Doug Hutchison (Loony Bin Jim), Colin Salmon (Paul), Wayne Knight (Micro), Dash Mihok (Martin), Julie Benz (Angela), Keram Malicki-Sanchez (Ink), Larry Day (Agent Miller).
Punisher: War Zone launches straight into the story, preferring to provide character and plot development as the story evolves. When we do finally get character development we find the Punisher really doesn’t have much depth, nor does the plot. As the good guys battle the bad guys it becomes obvious the film is about violence and gore, blood and bullets. With an ending that isn’t much of a surprise, the Punisher completes with a few bangs and a squirt of blood.
Acting was fairly disappointing with Stevenson displaying about as much emotion as a street sign. West was a bit more entertaining but lacked charisma. Hutchison did a nice job but couldn’t do enough to save the rest of the cast. The remainder of the cast felt either unpolished, inexperienced, or just plain flat.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were mediocre and minimally done to support the film. Effects were pretty good with nice action scenes, good violence, and plenty of gore shots. Dialogue was minimal and didn’t do much to add depth to the film. Sound was good as was the soundtrack which had some good hard music that fit the film well.
Overall Punisher: War Zone is a testosterone ride that is best enjoyed without the participation of brain cells to muddle the lack of reality. Those who enjoy extreme violence films and don’t care about plot, depth, or acting will enjoy this the most while others will find it seriously lacking.
With plenty of foul language, violence, gore, mild sexuality and drug use save this for older teens and above.
Punisher: War Zone is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
