Chris is the lead singer of a tribute band who idolizes the band Steel Dragon and lead singer Bobby. When Chris and Bobby are both kicked out of their respective bands at the same time Chris gets his shot at stardom as the new lead singer for Steel Dragon. As he sets out on tour with his new band, Chris finds life as a superstar isn’t quite how he imagined.
Mark Wahlberg (Chris/Izzy), Jennifer Aniston (Emily), Dominic West (Kirk), Jason Bonham (A.C.), Jeff Pilson (Jorgen), Zakk Wylde (Ghode), Timothy Spall (Mats), Blas Elias (Donny), Nick Catanese (Xander), Timothy Olyphant (Rob), Jason Flemyng (Bobby).
Rock Star starts off looking a bit campy with some plot setup before the story kicks into gear and the film gets moving. Once Chris takes over as lead singer for Steel Dragon the film morphs into something of a drama and musical hybrid that is surprisingly entertaining. The remainder of the film isn’t a big surprise but remains entertaining as Chris finds the rock-and-roll lifestyle can take quite a toll on relationships. The film finally winds down with an amusing ending that feels like something of a non-event after all the buildup.
Wahlberg did amazingly well in his role as a metal band lead singer, something that was unexpected going into the film. Aniston did nicely though her role was small and she felt somewhat underutilized. The remainder of the cast was a sprinkling of actual musicians from 80’s bands and most did fairly well with a few feeling somewhat out of place.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all nicely done and supported the film well while feeling quite realistic. Effects were minimal but well done. Dialogue was good with some mild humor and campiness mixed in with the drama. Sound was well done while the soundtrack was very enjoyable with plenty of good 80’s tunes.
Overall Rock Star is a light, easy to watch film that explores the common childhood dream of becoming a rock star. The drama isn’t too heavy, the comedy isn’t too deep, delivering an entertaining easy-going film. Fans of 80’s music will likely enjoy this the most.
With some adult concepts and activities, mild nudity, foul language, violence, sex scenes, and drug use save this for older teens and above.
Rock Star is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
