A rebel CIA agent has taken over on a small South American island and U.S. government agencies can’t remove him. Barney and his gang of mercenaries are the solution but once on the ground they realize there is more to the mission than they expected. With everything at stake, failure is not an option.
Sylvester Stallone (Barney), Jason Statham (Christmas), Jet Li (Yin), Dolph Lundgren (Gunner), Eric Roberts (Munroe), Randy Couture (Toll Road), Steve Austin (Paine), David Zayas (General Garza), Giselle Itie (Sandra), Gary Daniels (The Brit), Terry Crews (Hale Caesar), Mickey Rourke (Tool), Bruce Willis (Church), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Trench).
The cast in this film is absolutely amazing and would hint at an explosive film, which it is. However, they apparently spent all the budget on actors and effects and forgot to include a story. The plot in the film is awful and full of plenty of holes which is almost forgivable considering Stallone wrote, directed, and starred in the film so he was pretty busy at the time. Simply, this is all about guns, explosions, and testosterone. With a tiny bit of comedy.
Acting was amusing if nothing else. A few of the actors felt like they had some chemistry but most felt as if they were trying to be the action hero of the film, among all the other action heroes. Most delivered fairly well though there was a serious lack of emotion or energy to the film. Effects were pretty good with plenty of blood, gore, violence and explosions. They even threw in a car chase for good measure. Dialogue was a mix of serious, campy, and comedy though it mostly just felt flat. Sound and soundtrack were okay.
Overall The Expendables is an expendable film. If you enjoy mindless, numbing violence and an overload of testosterone you will probably find some joy with this one. Anyone interested in depth or the acting abilities of the cast will probably be somewhat disappointed.
With foul language, brutal violence, blood, and gore save this for older teens and above.
The Expendables is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
