Peter is a screenwriter in 1950’s Hollywood when he is accused of being a communist. Drinking to forget his troubles he is in a car wreck and loses his memory. Waking up in a small California town, Peter is mistaken for Luke, son of the local cinema owner lost during World War II. After being celebrated by the town and working to restore the cinema, Peter’s memory returns sending his life back into chaos.
Jim Carrey (Peter), Bob Balaban (Elvin), Jeffrey DeMunn (Ernie), Hal Holbrook (Doyle), Laurie Holden (Adele), Martin Landau (Harry), Brent Briscoe (Sheriff Coleman), David Ogden Stiers (Doc Stanton), Catherine Dent (Mabel).
The Majestic begins with some good character and setting background before the plot begins to unroll. The film feels a bit surrealistic but flows well with good plot movement and dramatic moments as punctuation. When Peter loses his memory and begins his new life as Luke the expectation of his returning memory builds good suspense in the film. With the addition of a love interest it mounts further as the audience hope to see the romance succeed before the inevitable return of Peter’s memory and the long expected happy ending of the film.
Acting was pretty good. Carrey did fairly well but still seems a bit less confident in a drama as compared to a comedy. Holden was a good choice to play opposite Carrey and delivered well. Landau, DeMunn, Holbrook, and Stiers also did very well. The remainder of the supporting cast was enjoyable all around.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good and the film obviously had a good budget though sets felt somewhat fake at times. The few effects in the film were action based and nicely done. Dialogue was very good as was sound and soundtrack.
Overall the Majestic is a nice, light drama with good romantic and suspense elements. Though a bit long, the film moves along well and the length really isn’t noticed. Drama and romantic drama fans will likely enjoy this the most.
With mild violence The Majestic should be fine for preens and above.
The Majestic is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
