Dr. Kruipen is an environmentalist doing research in the Arctic when his team uncovers the body of a wooly mammoth. As the body thaws it releases trapped parasites which quickly find the humans make good hosts. And when a new group of student assistants shows up at the remote site there is even more food for the parasites, quickly indicating the threat could be global.
Val Kilmer (Dr. Kruipen), Alexandra Staseson (Infected Girl), William Davis (Ted), Gary Chalk (Jack), Peter Kelamis (Mike), Kyle Schmid (Federico), Steph Song (Ling), Aaron Ashmore (Atom), Martha MacIsaac (Evelyn).
The Thaw starts off with the aftermath of what will happen in the film making for a bit of a confusing start. Once the plot starts rolling the film gets interesting pretty fast and what started out looking like a dud actually isn’t bad and the film retains interest through the not so surprising ending. The plot isn’t completely original being reminiscent of The Thing and a few other films but remains entertaining.
Acting was a mixed bag in The Thaw. It was surprising that Kilmer, easily the biggest name and probably most experienced in the film, wasn’t used more and probably could have added more to the film. MacIsaac was okay but overacted a bit and was presented as eye candy, which she really isn’t.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds are minimal but appropriately done for the film. Effects were nicely done with good bug CGI and a few action scenes. Gore shots were plentiful and very nicely done throughout. Dialogue was good with only a few overdone exchanges. Sound and soundtrack were good.
Overall The Thaw does a solid job of presenting a fairly well worn plot with a group of largely unknown actors. Sci-Fi Thriller and Creature Sci-Fi fans will likely find some pleasure with this one.
With some foul language, mild sexuality, horror and disturbing images, and plenty of gore save this for older teens and above.
The Thaw is no longer showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
