Whale Wars is the Animal Planet production following the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s whaling prevention activities. This season finds founder Paul Watson and his fleet off the coast of Antarctica trying to prevent Japanese whalers from killing any of the creatures.

There isn’t really any plot or character development in Whale Wars. The series is more of a documentary on the efforts of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to prevent whaling. Each episode details the attempts to halt the whaling and how the prevention techniques develop by the activists. As admirable as their goal may be, and as well produced as the series appears, it isn’t without problems. The biggest problem is that film footage and pivotal events seem to be constantly reused and revisited resulting in feeling that there is little that is new to each episode.
Acting isn’t really acting since this is a documentary. Watson is a mixed bag for the camera since he constantly looks disheveled yet has a strange charisma. Aultman on the other hand constantly comes across as brash and arrogant and would best be kept away from the lens. Bethune is probably the most enjoyable character to watch.
Camera work is pretty darn good considering the conditions. To imagine where the camera man had to be to get some of the shots is pretty impressive. There are no sets or manufactured backgrounds. The series is shot live, on the ships, out in the water. Dialogue is natural and fortunately most of the people in the series are fairly articulate. Soundtrack is minimally done but good.
Overall Whale Wars documents an impressive goal but does a poor job doing so with reused footage and a series that seems far to long for the content being delivered.
There really isn’t much to limit audience age with the series though some of the whale killing could be a concern with younger viewers.
Whale Wars: Season 3 is an Animal Planet series so it is not showing in any Littleton Colorado movie theatres.
