What are the odds that former Casino, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull co-stars Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci will be reuniting onscreen for a big-budget video game adaptation? We probably shouldn’t say for sure…but if we were putting money on it, we’d say “slim to none”. That hasn’t stopped director David O. Russell– who’s helming the adaptation of Sony’s Uncharted series– from name-dropping the actors to the press. Pipedream, or the most unlikely bit of future casting ever seen? Read on for the details, my gentle Examiner readers…
Make that “Enormously Questionable And Almost Certainly Unfounded Movie Rumor O’ The Day”. Right now, director David O. Russell– who gave us Three Kings, I Heart Huckabee’s, and the forthcoming The Fighter— is making the press rounds in support of his latest film, which brings together “Marky” Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale for the very first time. He’s also got the first video game adaptation of his (very strange) career on the horizon, an adaptation of the highly-successful PS3 series Uncharted. Before we get to the world’s most questionable rumor, a little background on the Uncharted franchise.
In Uncharted, players take the role of Nathan Drake– a descendant of Sir Francis– on a globe-trotting series of adventures in pursuit of several highly-expensive, incredibly rare ancient artifacts. There are two games in the Uncharted series, both of which have been massively successful for Sony, and since the very beginning Hollywood’s been eyeing the games as a potential franchise: they’ve got plenty of action, a charming hero at the center, and a series of ever-hotter women to serve as damsels-in-distress (though they’re all more than capable with a gun). The Uncharted games could make great movies…assuming the scripts are solid, the director’s right for the gig, and the cast is qualified.
Though the script is still being worked on and the casting hasn’t even started, director Russell has some very definite ideas about who he’d like to see starring in the film– namely, Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro. Say what? Here’s what they’re saying over at Showbiz 411:
Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci may finally be reuniting. There’s a plan afoot for them to co-star in “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.” David O. Russell–who’s just about to release “The Fighter”–has been developing a film from the popular video game Right now, the script is being composed from scratch. Word is the actual video game didn’t have much there aside from a concept and a name.
Russell didn’t fork over any plot points at last night’s premiere of “The Fighter.” But sources say the story will have something to do with antiquities dealers in New York.
There are a few things worth pointing out in this report. For one thing: Mark Wahlberg is all kinds of wrong for the film’s lead, but considering that he and Russell have worked together several times in the past– with, admittedly, great success– it’s entirely possible that the director would be interested in having Wahlberg lead the film. Secondly, why is the script being “written from scratch”? Both Uncharted games– especially the second one– had incredible storylines, plotlines that would be perfect for a big-budget, Hollywood adventure film (or two). Third: there’s simply very little chance that DeNiro and Pesci– the latter of which has all but retired from acting over the past decade– will be appearing together, tempting “antiquities dealer” role(s) or not.
So, what’s likely to happen here? Considering Russell’s involvement, anything could happen, so we’re just going to have to keep our eyes peeled and our ears to the ground on any further information as it becomes available.
