This past Tuesday, November 16th, there was a special screening of the drama Somewhere at the Edwards Marq*E IMAX Theater.
This was a fairly interesting movie going experience mostly because it almost didn’t wind up happening for me. I was the first one to arrive around 7:00pm and the ticket usher had no idea about Somewhere being shown there that evening. So I tell him the movie I’m supposed to see and he wrinkles every facial feature you can imagine before telling me that the only screening being shown there that night is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1. He asks if I was sure it wasn’t at the other Edwards theater, which was clear across town and would be impossible to get to in less than 30 minutes. I was positive the email said it was being shown at that theater, so after contemplating leaving I decided to stick around. Luckily, everyone showed up about twenty minutes later and everything went as planned. The ticket usher then tells me, “Oh, here they are. They just weren’t here yet.” Yeah…thanks.
After the film, another movie theater attendant asked me how the movie was. So I start telling him about Somewhere without telling him the title of the film and I’m fairly certain he thought I was talking about Harry Potter. Considering Harry Potter is nearly two and a half hours long and Somewhere was a little over an hour and a half, you’d think the guy would realize the difference there. Does it seem like movie theater staff is getting more and more oblivious to the films being shown in the theater they’re working in or is it just me?
Another empty theater screening. Five people total were in the theater; two movie reps, a critic and her guest, and me. That’s it.
Somewhere will see a limited release Wednesday, December 22nd. The film will be released in Houston on Friday, January 21st.
